Theatre Education Books

Bailey, Sally Dorothy. Wings to Fly: Bringing Theatre Arts to Students with Special Needs. Rockville, MD, 1993. ISBN 0-933149-58-1 LOC PN1590.H36B35

The author writes about the education of special needs students at the Bethesda Academy of Performing Arts. This book is not just for special education teachers – because of mainstreamed students, and those with learning disabilities being diagnosed more frequently than in the past, most teachers have a percentage of special needs students in their classroom. The author writes descriptions of common and rare disabilities, and how their needs can be met in theatre classes. In addition, most of the excellent lesson plans, games and ideas can be used with all students. There are appendices with resource group addresses and building accessibility guidelines.

Landy, Robert J. Handbook of Educational Drama and Theatre. Westport, CT, Greenwood Press, 1982. ISBN 0-919-22947-3 LOC PN3171.L28

A comprehensive work which explains nearly every use of educational drama and theatre: who can benefit from it, how they benefit, and examples of these uses. The author references the work of many of the leaders in the field, with interviews and observations of them. It is mostly theoretical and anecdotal.

Creative Drama Theory & Practice

Cheifetz, Dan. Theatre in My Head. Boston, Little, Brown, and Co. 1971.

Cheifetz wrote this book after running a series of theater workshops for children in the late sixties, which were integrated both racially and economically. In it, he describes some of the methods he used with the children, playing games, creating pantomimes, and developing improvisations. His reflections on his interactions with the students are very valuable, and he explains not only how the activities were implemented in his workshops, but also the positive or negative reactions of the children. This is very unusual in a theatre education book, as most tell of successes, but leave out any mistakes that could serve as a cautionary example.

Heinig, Ruth Beall and Lydia Stillwell. Creative Drama for the Classroom. Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, 1981.

A useful book with extensive examples and suggestions, it moves from warm-ups to pantomime to story dramatization in careful steps. There is an excellent chapter on the leader’s role in creating freedom and acceptance in a creative drama classroom.

McCaslin, Nellie, Ed. Children and Drama. New York, David McKay, 1975. ISBN: 0-679-30269-7

Contains essays on creative drama, children’s theatre, and education by various professors, playwrights and leaders in the field. Some of the writing is dated, but the book is worth reading for the philosophies of the authors.

Ward, Winnifred. Stories to Dramatize.

A huge collection of stories from literature and fables, arranged by age level. They are almost guaranteed to be successful because of Ward’s vast experience in creative drama. Because of the sophistication (in terms of following storylines) of today’s children, the older age group stories could be tried with younger children.

Books on Performance, Acting Techniques & Methods

Barker, Clive. Theatre Games: A New Approach to Drama Training. London, Meuthen, 1986. ISBN: 0-910482-92-6 LOC: PN2061.B28 1978

Although this book contains many theatre games, the games are designed and presented for use by professional, adult actors. It is written so that an adult who has forgotten the spontaneity of childhood imagination can develop the skills that were lost through growing up. Clive Barker has written a very in depth book about his methods of playing theatre games to train actors, and it is good reading for teachers –with a few adaptations, many of the games can be played with children and young adults.

Brestoff, Richard. The Great Acting Teachers and Their Methods. Smith and Krauss, 1995. ISBN: 1-57525-012-8 LOC: PN2075.B674 1995

This book provides an overview of the history of how actors learned to act from the birth of theatre to today. There are chapters on Stanislavski, Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, Viola Spolin, and Brecht.

Subtitled: "Beyond the Method" A Revolutionary Approach to Acting and Living, this book is a philosophy for actors as well as a guide to acting.

Books on Improvisation, Theatre Games, and Exercises

Cassady, Marsh. Acting Games. Meriwether Publishing, Ltd., Colorado Springs, CO, 1993.

There are four parts to this book, each containing a great number of exercises. They are most useful with adolescents, because some of them are quite complex. The fourth section of the book gives directions for character study in terms that a junior high or high school student can understand.

Love, Douglas. Imagination Station: 99 Games to Spark Your Imagination. Harper Collins, New York, 1995.

This game book is written for a young person to understand, so they are easy to explain and easy to learn. The games include concentration, physical , and verbal activities. There are additional ideas to make the games more complex on every page.

Novelly, Maria C. Theatre Games for Young Performer. Meriwether Publishing, Ltd. , Colorado Springs, CO, 1985.

A great sourcebook that even a teacher inexperienced with theatre can use. The games are for adolescent students, with pantomime, voice, and improvisation as the main focus. What makes this book really great is the sample worksheets, an excellent index of the games, and the chapter on planning the theatre class/program.

Orlick, Terry. The Cooperative Sports and Games Book. Pantheon Books, New York, 1978.

Orlick, Terry. The Second Cooperative Sports and Games Book. Pantheon Books, New York, 1982.

Both of these books contain many games that are useful in all kinds of theatre classes, particularly because the games are designed so that working together is the rule rather than the exception. There are even games that can be played in a swimming pool.

Spolin, Viola. Theatre Games for the Classroom: A Teacher’s Handbook. Evanston, IL, Northwestern University Press, 1986.

A classic book of theatre games, which are very good for elementary school students. There are phrases with each game to help the teacher coach the participants, keeping everyone involved. There is an index, a glossary of theatre terms, and suggestions for sequences of the games which is very useful for a teacher.

Way, Brian. Development Through Drama.

A detailed volume on the various aspects of drama, with outlines of activities for the classroom. For those of us stateside, some specifics of the activities would have to be changed; the situations are very British (i.e., an improvisation on a family arguing over how to cross the channel).
